What I've Learnt at the STC India Annual Conference 2009

December 7, 2009 15:45 by Onkar Telkikar

Session: Creating Your Portfolio

Speaker: Anindita Basu

Important Points to Remember

  • It is very important for a technical writer to have a portfolio. A portfolio is like your visiting card. It is an excerpt of your creative work in technical writing.
  • It is also very important that you create your portfolio from scratch. You should not use any resources from your office for creating your portfolio. Moreover, you should not use any content from your official projects, as it is copyrighted.
  • Your blog is not your writing sample.
  • It is best to work on your own project and create a portfolio.
  • You can send your portfolio for a peer review. A review by the target audience (for whom the document is generated) is also very important.
  • You should get yourself a writer's toolkit.

Some Examples of Tools

  • Content Authoring Tools: OpenOffice Writer, GoogleDocs
  • Image Manipulation Tool: IrfanView
  • Publishing Tools: Microsoft HTML Help Workshop, HelpMaker Help Authoring Tools

Working on Projects (Some Useful URLs)

Note: You can also have a look at the YouTube Help Center.

Some Documents that Your Portfolio Can Have

  • A How-to Document (Explaining a Procedure)
  • A Quick Start Guide
  • An Installation Guide
  • A User Guide
  • A Reference Guide, for example, an API Guide or a Glossary
  • A Specification Document that explains how something should work
  • Your Volunteer Project
  • A Tutorial

Showcasing Your Portfolio

  • Introduce each sample from your portfolio.
  • Give some context to the interviewer.
  • Mention the principles that you used for creating your sample.
  • Mention the challenges that you faced while creating your portfolio.
  • Create a softcopy of your samples and keep it up-to-date.
  • Carry your laptop, if possible.
  • Take printouts wherever applicable.

In Retrospect

November 17, 2009 10:12 by Onkar Telkikar

Hi Colleagues & Friends,

As I look back to that fine morning in December 2008, when I decided to join the Fast Track Course at Technowrites, I begin to think that it has been my privilege to be associated with Technowrites and with Makarand Sir. Now, while reaping the benefits of my classroom training  as well as of my hands-on experience as a trainee Technical Writer, I just think why Technowrites doesn't start a course on freelancing? Right from the days when I was working as a Content Writer, I used to think that I should also work as a freelancer. But I didn't know how to lift this idea off the ground. I didn't have proper information about starting a freelancing career.

As Technowrites has already carved a niche for itself in the world of Technical Communication, conducting a course on freelancing won't be a big deal for it. In fact, it would earn some more brownie points in this lesser explored area also. (Frankly, I'm not aware of any institute in India that conducts a course on freelancing). But I think, Makarand Sir, who has worked as a freelancer in the past, can carry this idea to its triumphant completion. I look forward to Makarand Sir, to initiate us, the ever enthusiastic lot, into the field of freelancing.

Friends, again, your esteemed ideas and suggestions are always welcome!

Keep writing,

Onkar

Windows 7 is Here!

October 27, 2009 09:56 by Onkar Telkikar

I guess the most striking feature of the Windows 7 OS is Shake It... Let's see why?

Suppose, you have 7 or 8 windows of different applications open at a time on your machine. And you want to concentrate on a single window and work in it. Just click the title bar of that  window, keep the left mouse button pressed, and just shake your mouse. Presto! All other windows will disappear. When you are done with your work in that particular window, again shake it. All the other windows will be displayed on the screen again!

Cheers!

Fun in Technical Writing

October 22, 2009 13:58 by Onkar Telkikar

Hi Friends,

This is my first entry in our Technowrites' blog. I just thought of writing some proverbs related to our profession. Your suggestions and additions are most welcome!

  • Living to write... Writing to live!
  • A Ctrl+Z in time, saves nine!
  • A complete document in hand is worth two in the review phase!

Warm Regards,

Onkar Telkikar
